Taymouth Castle - Stained Glass Repair

Stained glass repair project at Taymouth Castle focused on the careful conservation and restoration of historic stained and leaded glass panels within one of Scotland’s most significant heritage buildings. The work required traditional craftsmanship and a conservation-led approach to preserve the original artistry while ensuring long-term durability. All stained glass repair works were carried out with close attention to historical accuracy, maintaining the original character, colour and detailing of the windows.

Project Overview

What Was Done

The stained glass panels were carefully removed from site and transported to our studio for detailed restoration. Each panel was assessed before undergoing stained glass repair using traditional methods.
Paints, glass stains and enamels were applied on a like-for-like basis to replicate the original artwork and detailing. The restored glass was then kiln-fired to permanently fuse the finishes and ensure colour stability. Once complete, the panels were re-leaded where required and returned to site for professional installation.

This stained glass repair project ensured the restored windows retained their historic appearance while improving their structural integrity and longevity.

Materials Used for Stained Glass Repair

  • Original and replacement stained glass matched for colour, texture and opacity
  • Traditional glass stains, paints and vitreous enamels applied like for like
  • Lead cames suitable for historic stained and leaded glass panels
  • Solder and reinforcement ties for panel strength
  • Kiln firing to permanently bond paints and enamels to the glass
  • Heritage-appropriate glazing compounds and fixings

Key Challenges & Solutions

Preserving original artwork and leadwork

Wherever possible, original glass and leadwork were retained. Repairs were targeted only where deterioration was present, ensuring the stained glass repair remained true to the original construction.

Achieving accurate colour and detail matching

Historic colour palettes and painted detailing were carefully replicated using traditional stains and enamels, kiln-fired to achieve a seamless match with the surrounding glass.

Ensuring long-term stability after restoration

Re-leading and reinforcement were carried out where required, ensuring the restored stained glass panels were structurally sound and suitable for long-term installation within a historic environment.
