Ardross Castle – Stained Glass Repair Overview

What Was Done for Stained Glass Repair

We carried out detailed stained glass repair alongside general glazing works throughout Ardross Castle. The stained glass panels were carefully removed and restored using traditional methods.

All stained glass repair work was completed using like-for-like glass stains, paints and enamels to accurately match the original artwork. The painted glass was kiln-fired to ensure long-lasting colour and durability before being returned to site. Once complete, the restored stained glass panels were professionally reinstalled, preserving the historic appearance while improving the condition and lifespan of the glazing.
This project highlights our expertise in stained glass repair for historic and heritage buildings across Scotland.

Key Challenges & Solutions

Preserving original lead work while ensuring structural integrity

A key challenge of this stained glass repair project was retaining as much of the original lead work as possible. Each panel was carefully assessed to identify areas that could be conserved rather than replaced. Where reinforcement was required, traditional methods and materials were used to strengthen the panels while preserving their original structure and appearance.

Matching historical glass colours and textures

Achieving a seamless repair required precise colour and texture matching. Replacement glass was carefully selected to replicate the original stained glass, ensuring consistency across the restored panels. Traditional glass stains, paints and enamels were applied and kiln-fired to achieve an authentic finish that blended naturally with the existing artwork.

Integrating modern glazing techniques without compromising heritage aesthetics

Modern glazing techniques were discreetly incorporated to improve durability and longevity without altering the historic look of the windows. This approach ensured the stained glass repair met current performance expectations while maintaining the visual integrity and heritage character of Ardross Castle.
